Bisphosphonates

Bisphosphonates slow the cells that break down bone, which helps bones keep their strength. Alendronate treats and prevents osteoporosis and treats Paget's disease of bone. Heartburn, stomach pain, and irritation of the esophagus are common, so the tablet is taken on an empty stomach with plain water while staying upright. Rare risks include jaw bone damage, unusual thigh bone fractures, and bone or joint pain.
