Thrombolytics (fibrinolytics)
Thrombolytics convert plasminogen to plasmin, the body's own clot-dissolving enzyme, to break up clots that are blocking blood flow. Alteplase treats acute ischemic stroke, heart attack, and large clots in the lungs, and it works best when given soon after symptoms start. Bleeding is the main risk and can occur anywhere, including inside the brain. They are not given to people with active bleeding, a recent stroke, brain surgery, or head injury, or very high blood pressure, and the person is watched closely during and after the infusion.
