Thiazide diuretics

Thiazide diuretics block sodium reabsorption in the distal tubule of the kidney. They are first-line drugs for high blood pressure and are also used for mild swelling. They can lower potassium, sodium, and magnesium, and raise blood sugar, uric acid, and calcium. They are usually taken in the morning so that extra urination does not disrupt sleep.
