Statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors)

Statins inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol. They lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Muscle aches are the most common complaint, and rhabdomyolysis, a severe breakdown of muscle tissue, is a rare but serious complication. Cholesterol levels and liver function are checked during treatment, and unexplained muscle pain or weakness should be reported.
