SGLT2 inhibitors

SGLT2 inhibitors make the kidneys pass extra sugar out in the urine by blocking a sugar transporter in the kidney. They treat type 2 diabetes, and some also lower the risk of heart failure hospitalization, heart disease death, and kidney decline. Genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, extra urination, and dehydration are the common side effects. A rare but serious risk is ketoacidosis that can happen even when blood sugar is near normal, so they may be paused before surgery or during serious illness.
