Proton pump inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors shut down the pumps in the stomach lining that secrete acid, giving the strongest acid suppression available. They treat GERD, peptic ulcers, and H. pylori infection and protect the stomach during NSAID or steroid therapy. They work best taken 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Long-term use is linked to low magnesium and B12 levels, fractures, and C. difficile infection.
