Potassium supplements

Potassium supplements prevent and treat low potassium, which often follows treatment with loop or thiazide diuretics. Oral forms are taken with food and a full glass of water to protect the stomach. IV potassium is always diluted and infused slowly with a pump, and it is never given as a rapid IV push. Potassium levels and kidney function are monitored, since high potassium can cause fatal arrhythmias.
