Oxytocics (uterine stimulants)
Oxytocics make the muscle of the uterus contract. Oxytocin is used to start or strengthen labor and to control bleeding after delivery. Contractions that come too strong or too close together can stress the baby and, rarely, rupture the uterus, and large amounts can cause water retention. Because of these risks, oxytocin is given by infusion pump with continuous monitoring of contractions and the baby's heart rate.
