Antiprotozoals and anaerobic antibiotics (nitroimidazoles)

Nitroimidazoles kill anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites by damaging their DNA. Metronidazole treats trichomoniasis, amebiasis, and serious anaerobic infections in the abdomen, skin, bones, and blood. Nausea, a metallic taste, and headache are common, and rarely they affect the nerves or brain. Alcohol can cause flushing, vomiting, and a racing heart, so it is avoided during treatment and for several days afterward.
