Magnesium salts

Magnesium salts replace magnesium and, at higher doses, calm overactive nerves and muscles. Magnesium sulfate injection treats low magnesium and prevents and controls seizures in preeclampsia and eclampsia. Flushing, sweating, and low blood pressure can occur, and too much magnesium causes loss of reflexes, slowed breathing, and heart problems. Reflexes, breathing, urine output, and blood levels are watched, and calcium gluconate reverses magnesium toxicity.
