Loop diuretics

Loop diuretics block sodium and chloride reabsorption in the loop of Henle, producing the strongest fluid loss of any diuretic class. They treat swelling and fluid overload from heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease, including acute pulmonary edema. They lower potassium, sodium, and magnesium, which can lead to dehydration, low blood pressure, and arrhythmias. Body weight, fluid balance, and electrolytes are monitored, and high IV doses given too quickly can damage hearing.
