Glycopeptide antibiotics
Glycopeptide antibiotics block cell wall synthesis in gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin is a mainstay for MRSA and other serious resistant infections, and it is given by mouth only for C. difficile infection. Blood levels are monitored to keep doses effective while limiting harm to the kidneys and hearing. Infusing it too quickly causes flushing and a rash on the upper body, so it is infused over at least an hour.
