Gabapentinoids
Gabapentinoids bind calcium channels in nerve cells and reduce the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Gabapentin and pregabalin treat nerve pain, such as diabetic neuropathy and post-shingles pain, and certain seizures. Dizziness and drowsiness are common and raise the risk of falls, especially in older adults. Combining them with opioids or other sedatives increases the risk of slowed breathing, and doses are lowered when kidney function is reduced.
