CNS stimulants
CNS stimulants increase dopamine and norepinephrine activity in the brain, which improves attention and reduces hyperactive and impulsive behavior. Methylphenidate and amphetamines treat ADHD, and some are also used for narcolepsy. Trouble sleeping, decreased appetite, weight loss, stomach pain, headache, and a faster heart rate are common, and growth can slow in children. They are controlled substances with a high potential for misuse and dependence, so they are stored securely and their use is reviewed regularly.
