Calcium channel blockers

Calcium channel blockers stop calcium from entering cells in the heart and the muscle walls of blood vessels. Dihydropyridines such as amlodipine mainly widen arteries and are used for high blood pressure and angina. Non-dihydropyridines such as diltiazem and verapamil also slow the heart rate and are used for some arrhythmias. Common side effects include low blood pressure, dizziness, ankle swelling, and, with the heart-slowing agents, a slow pulse.
