Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines enhance GABA, the brain's main calming neurotransmitter. They treat anxiety, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and insomnia and are used for sedation before procedures. Sedation, falls, and slowed breathing are the major risks, especially when combined with opioids or alcohol. Long-term use leads to dependence, so they are stopped gradually, and flumazenil can reverse an overdose.
