Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
Angiotensin II receptor blockers stop angiotensin II from binding its receptor, which relaxes blood vessels and lowers aldosterone. They treat high blood pressure and heart failure and help protect the kidneys in diabetes, with effects similar to ACE inhibitors. They rarely cause the dry cough seen with ACE inhibitors, which makes them a common substitute. Blood pressure, potassium, and kidney function are monitored, and they are avoided in pregnancy.
