Aldosterone antagonists (potassium-sparing diuretics)
Aldosterone antagonists block aldosterone in the kidney, so the body excretes sodium and water while holding on to potassium. Spironolactone treats heart failure, fluid buildup from liver cirrhosis, hard-to-control high blood pressure, and excess aldosterone production. High potassium is the main danger, especially alongside ACE inhibitors, ARBs, potassium supplements, or reduced kidney function. Spironolactone can also cause breast enlargement in men and irregular periods in women.
