Adrenergic agonists (sympathomimetics)
Adrenergic agonists act on the same receptors as adrenaline and noradrenaline, tightening blood vessels, speeding and strengthening the heartbeat, and opening the airways. Epinephrine is the first treatment for anaphylaxis, and drugs in this class are also used to raise blood pressure in shock. A racing or pounding heart, anxiety, shakiness, headache, and high blood pressure are common. Because small dosing errors can cause dangerous rhythms and blood pressure spikes, the concentration and route are checked carefully.
